Step 6 – Customs and Excise Declaration Form (Form 12)

The Customs and Excise Declaration Form (also known as Form 12) is a legally required document issued by Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA). Please note that now only goods whose value exceed MK500,000.00 will be cleared on form 12 (export/import).

Required Paperwork:  In order to apply for the Customs and Excise Declaration Form the document obtained from the previous steps are required: – Business registration, Buying licence, Currency Declaration form, Phytosanitary Certificate and SADC Certificate of Origin.

Time and Cost: The process takes two days and costs 20,000 MWK; of this 5000 MWK is the official fee paid directly to the MRA and 15,000 MWK is the service charge paid to the authorized customs clearing agent. Customs clearing agent service charges ranged from 15,000 to 50,000 MWK; the agent must be authorized by the MRA in order to have access to the computerized system required to process the Customs and Declaration Form.

The Process: Take the five forms obtained previously to the authorized customs clearing agent and two days later receive the Customs and Excise Declaration Form (also known as Form 12).

Validity: A new form is needed for each shipment.
